Have you ever been in the clutch of a psychopath?
Over the course of our lives, we all experience many relationships. Some are of the platonic or familial variety, while others are decidedly more romantic.
And in these romantic relationships, there are bound to be many trials. Some have more downs than anything that ultimately leads to the demise of the relationship. So, what happens when these downs are more than just that?
When they are actually emotionally detrimental to someone in the relationship and they reveal it is an abusive relationship they have found themselves in. That is when the person suffering questions everything while feeling trapped.
I explored this in M.L. Stark’s novel Burning Desire: The Psychopath And The Girl In Black Prada Shoes Part 1.”–Pacific Book Review—Reviewed by: Aly Avina
Welcome to America Tonight Radio Show
Kate Delaney interviewed author M. L. Stark about psychological abuse, emotional manipulation, and the real-life experiences that inspired her books.
Being invited onto America Tonight was both emotional and meaningful for me. The conversation was not simply about books — it became a discussion about survival, emotional trauma, and the hidden realities many people experience behind closed doors.
During the interview, Kate Delaney asked an important question:
How many people are unknowingly living with a psychopath?
It is a difficult subject, but also an important one.
From the beginning of the conversation, I felt safe speaking with her. Kate approached the interview with empathy, intelligence, and genuine curiosity. We discussed emotional abuse, psychological manipulation, toxic relationships, and why I eventually chose to write openly about my experiences.
Writing became part of my healing process.
About the interview
In this recorded interview, I explain some of the deeper motivations behind my books and why I chose to write about psychologically abusive relationships.
Not everyone understands why survivors speak publicly about trauma. For me, writing became a way to process experiences that had profoundly shaped my life. It also became a way to help others recognise behaviours they may not yet fully understand themselves.
Psychopaths and manipulative personalities often hide behind charm, charisma, and carefully constructed appearances. Many victims do not recognise the danger until they are already emotionally trapped.
That reality became one of the central themes throughout my writing.
To begin with, the interview became an important experience in my journey as an author.
It allowed me to speak openly about emotional abuse, psychological manipulation, and the experiences that eventually inspired my books. More importantly, it gave me the opportunity to reach people who may be living through similar situations themselves.
I wanted the conversation to be about more than promotion. I wanted it to raise awareness about abusive relationships and help others recognise behaviours that are often difficult to identify while trapped within them.
Leaving an abusive relationship is rarely simple — but it is possible.
The interview also explores how manipulation can slowly become normalised inside a toxic relationship. Over time, emotional confusion replaces clarity, and unhealthy behaviour begins to feel familiar.
These are experiences many survivors quietly carry for years.
A Conversation That Mattered
Kate Delaney’s professionalism and warmth immediately made the conversation feel genuine rather than performative. Her ability to discuss difficult subjects with both seriousness and compassion helped create an environment where deeper topics could be explored honestly.
The interview was broadcast across multiple stations throughout the United States, reaching a wide audience interested in psychology, relationships, trauma recovery, and personal transformation.
For me, the experience represented more than media exposure. It became part of a larger purpose:
to raise awareness about emotional abuse, coercive control, and the psychological damage manipulative relationships can leave behind.
Why These Stories Were Written
My books explore themes of emotional abuse, deception, psychological control, trauma bonding, and survival.
The characters and situations reflect emotional realities many people silently endure every day.
I wanted to write honestly about:
- manipulation disguised as love
- emotional dependency
- psychological confusion
- narcissistic behaviour
- coercive relationships
- and the long process of reclaiming oneself afterwards
Too often, victims blame themselves for not seeing the warning signs sooner. In reality, manipulative individuals are frequently highly skilled at concealing their true nature.
That is why awareness matters.
Final Reflection
The interview with America Tonight became an important milestone in my journey as both a writer and survivor.
It reminded me that difficult experiences can still be transformed into something meaningful — something capable of helping other people recognise unhealthy patterns, ask important questions, and understand that they are not alone.
Some stories are not written simply to entertain.
Some are written to be understood.
Opportunities are like surprises. If you wait too long you miss them.

April 2021 I’ve the first conversation with Kate. First she conducted a preliminary interview with me for approx. 20-25 minutes. Then Kate summarises she has done interviews repeatedly with 16,000 people during her twenty-years in radio and television. She broadcast from all over the United States and the world. However, I was nervous as a wreck. I told her with a shaking voice. Therefore, she told me: “Do not worry. Everything will be fine.” Immediately, I fully trusted her.
Why The Interview Mattered
Her high energy, interactive and entertaining way of talking to me was exceptional. Kate’s experience moved me beyond any existing thinking and expectations. However, it was an important stage, going on air to discuss and promote my books. It made me feel I could create alternative possibilities. And do more for my books to capture my reader’s interest.
Kate Delaney is the author of several books and Forbes published her latest business book: Deal Your Own Destiny, Increase Your Odds, Win Big and Become Extraordinary.
Kate is also an award-winning National broadcast personality who has interviewed over 16,000 people in twenty-years in her radio and television career. Kate is a top business speaker
The interview clearly told me that Kate is a top business speaker. Her intelligent and straightforward approach opened the conversation in a meaningful way. I truly wanted to tell her about my story. Especially of what lay behind BURNING DESIRE & BURNING DESIRE FADES: The Psychopath and the Girl in Black Prada Shoes.
They announced the 11 minute recorded interview on over 210 stations in USA. And it appeals to over 26 million people. Just to mention a few:
- KVOI 1030 the Voice in Tucson Arizona
- KKGX 920 am/fm – Palm Springs, California
- WGSO 990 am/fm in New Orleans.
When Manipulation Becomes Invisible
BURNING DESIRE and BURNING DESIRE FADES – The Psychopath and the Girl in Black Prada Shoes.
These books drip of emotional abuse. It’s about uncertainty I’ve lived through under the control of a psychopath. With self-esteem, self-worth, and everything at stake, I want to portray the brutal and painful truth. I want to tell you how it is to be with a psychopath. I want to show you how they think––if they actually think. My experience with the narcissist I was in love with mostly showed that he did not care. No empathy, because he was only thinking about himself. Nor did he care about me.
The series explores experiences that are far more common than many people realise. I want to bring awareness. I want to shed light on how it is to be a vulnerable woman. About a woman who is trying to find herself through a maze of abuse. There is only one way to deal with a psychopath. Had I known better, I would never get involved with one. But it’s easier said than done! Such people are virtually invisible to their targets. And it’s impossible to see through them before it’s too late.
Some nice ‘Good Reads Review’
BURNING DESIRE: The Psychopath and the Girl in Black Prada Shoes. This book was very hard for me to put down and as I read each page, I found myself nodding in an agreement with its text. As it is written by a survivor of emotional abuse, I appreciated it greatly as if the author was right beside me telling me their story and what to look out for should it happen again and the reasons why we fall for these certain types of people. This book is the last thing your abuser wants you to read. Quick read and provides practical advice on healing as well as walking you through revelations you may not have gotten yet.

BURNING DESIRE FADES: was the epitome of a home-run contemporary read. There were times I wanted to reach into the book, grab Mary (not violently! She has enough violence in her life), and tell her to wake up! That’s how convincing and spot-on author’s voice is. I give it a 5 out of 5, and I’d recommend it to everyone, an eye-opening read!
